Many careers in tax are poised for growth, which means that there will be more opportunities to work in these fields in the future. Which careers in tax are best?
When most people think of tax careers, they think of accountants and tax advisors. Ultimately, they think of April 15th, the day when everyone’s taxes are due.
If you’ve done some digging into tax careers, you likely already know that it’s a vast world with tons of different opportunities and directions you can take. So, which one is the right one?
Read on as we talk about some of the best careers in tax, including some of the steps you’ll need to take to get there.
Tax Lawyers
A tax lawyer (aka a tax attorney) has the job of guiding businesses and public figures through the legal side of taxation. The objective is to ensure that all of your clients are in legal compliance with relevant tax codes and laws. This comes in handy often, but especially when someone is looking to start or expand a business.
To become a tax lawyer, you’ll start with a relevant bachelor’s degree in something like mathematics or accounting. Then, you’ll attend law school. Once you’ve graduated from law school, it’s advisable to receive tax law certification or a master’s degree in tax law, although this isn’t required.
Tax Preparers
Tax preparation is a lot like what it sounds like: getting all of the information together to pay taxes the right way. If you love working with people and improving their lives, you may enjoy working as a tax preparer.
Most tax preparers do earn a bachelor’s degree in a relevant field such as accounting. Then, they become a certified individual and begin the process of getting IRS approval to do things like file taxes online. While it’s still a lot of work to become a tax preparer, it won’t take as long as becoming a tax lawyer.
Certified Public Accountants
Maybe taxes are only one of your many accounting interests. If so, it’s worth becoming a certified public accountant. A certified public accountant can take on all sorts of clients, from individuals to businesses, and manage everything from their funding to their investments.
If you’ve already got the credentials for accounting, you only have one more step to take. You will need to take an intense four-part test to receive certification. Believe it or not, this additional step can open all sorts of doors for employment opportunities!
